Spam Alert: Fraudulent Phishing Emails From "Helpdesk" or "Mail" is an Attempt to Steal Usernames and Passwords

Users have reported receiving email messages claiming to be from "Mail" or the "Help desk" trying to persuade users to reply giving their usernames and passwords. The message claims that the "your webmail quota has exceeded the storage limit of 20GB as set by helpdesk support" and that users are to "re-validate your mailbox below to enable us Increase your mailbox quota".  Neither the school district nor any legitimate outside vendor will ever ask you to divulge your password by email. Passwords and other sensitive information should never be sent in an email.

This type of fraudulent message is known as a phishing scan. The following is a sample of the email message:

Dear Account Owner,

This is a final notification on your account usage. Be informed
that your webmail quota has exceeded the storage limit of 20GB
as set by helpdesk support. Your are therefore currently running
on 23GB due to hidden files and folder on your Mailbox.

In order to avoid interruption on your email account, you will
have to re-validate your mailbox below to enable us Increase
your mailbox quota:

Username:
Password:
Confirm Password:

Failure to do this, will result in limited access to your mailbox.

Although the district's spam email filter is constantly updating the spam filters, spammers change tactics and some of these messages do get through. The school district  advises users who receive these or other suspicious messages to delete them without replying or clicking on any links the messages may contain.
